Intel Ireland employee Amir Davis recently picked up a prestigious Ireland Involved Award in the category of International Development. The awards, which are now in their 4th year, are part of a European-wide initiative to recognise the work of volunteers and at the event, which was hosted at Dublin Castle, 30 shortlisted submissions were considered in 10 different categories.

The awards themselves were hosted by RTE's Claire Byrne, and were presented by 2011 Rose of Tralee, Tara Talbot. President of Ireland Michael D Higgins also attended the event and addressed the audience on their magnificent achievements.

Amir, who was nominated by a colleague in Intel, was the winner of the International Development award for his pioneering work at a unique school in Kalaskey, a small Pakistan village. The Amir Public school – which was founded by Amir‘s parents – provides free education for local boys and girls, from 3 to 12 years old.

Although Amir lives in Ireland with his family, he is responsible for the schools‘ management, staffing, curriculum and fundraising. What he has achieved in the last three years is incredible. Each of the school’s 160 students is given free school uniforms, books and stationary, relieving families of a huge financial burden. Without these free facilities, the local children are likely to be taken into child labour to help provide for their families. Thanks to Amir’s fundraising, the school now employs 9 local people from the village, students get free regular medical check-ups, and new classrooms, bathrooms and furniture have been added to the school facilities.

Amir is also responsible for the curriculum of the school and consults with educational experts to keep building the academic standards of the school. He manages the staff, educational experts and volunteers and meets with them via Skype each week. Volunteers are trained to meet with parents to help them understand the impact that education has on their children’s future and to invite them to enrol.

Amir's passionate leadership and strong commitment to change hundreds of lives can been seen through what he has delivered so far. Amir is relentless in his pursuit of free education and spreading the message that education is key to building stronger futures for the children of Kalaskey.
