Long-awaited release of 800 MHz and part of 2.6 GHz spectrum for Mobile Broadband to benefit UK businesses and consumers

 

Swindon, UK – 18th March 2010 – Intel UK Managing Director Graham Palmer today welcomed the recent announcement by the Rt. Hon. Stephen Timms to direct Ofcom to implement the final recommendations of the Independent Spectrum Broker with regard to releasing the 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz spectrum, a move which Intel believes will allow the UK to move forward positively on mobile wireless broadband. In addition, Mr Palmer was particularly pleased that the UK Government had recognised the importance of releasing part of the 2.6 GHz band ahead of and separately from any combined 800MHz / 2.6 GHz award.

 

Mr Palmer said: "Building upon the global success of Mobile WiMAX including deployments in US, Korea, Russia, Japan and many other countries, Intel has remained committed to the release of 2.6 GHz band in the UK for mobile broadband. While there have been significant delays for numerous reasons we support the UK Government in moving forward to release some of the 2.6 GHz spectrum and we hope this will occur in 2010.”
