In Fast Company’s newly released list of the Most Innovative Companies of 2019, Intel took No. 8 in the robotics category for its collaborative “minibots” – a research effort within Intel Labs to develop robots that work together to map and navigate unknown areas.

Advanced robotics and artificial intelligence have, to date, required large investment and intensive computational power. These distributed, autonomous and collaborative minibots, which are operated by a system-on-chip that delivers efficiencies orders of magnitude beyond what was previously possible, represent the first step toward enabling the development of energy- and cost-efficient multirobot systems. Working together, these bots have the potential to disrupt a wide range of applications ranging from search and rescue missions to precision agriculture and farming.

Fast Company writes:

“On the most basic level, a robot or drone is an autonomous mobile computer, which means that chipmaking giant Intel has plenty of relevant experience. Its research arm, Intel Labs, is developing collaborative minibots — small, AI-infused robots that can walk or fly into unknown spaces and collect valuable data as a team.”
