Intel Optane Persistent Memory Wins a Best of VMworld 2020 Award

The editors of TechTarget’s SearchServerVirtualization.com have selected Intel® Optane™ persistent memory as a Best of VMworld 2020 Award co-winner in the Disruptive Technology category.

What’s New: The editors of TechTarget’s SearchServerVirtualization.com have selected Intel® Optane™ persistent memory as a Best of VMworld 2020 Award co-winner in the Disruptive Technology category.

“With new applications pushing the envelope on infrastructure performance, it is no wonder that Intel received a 2020 ‘Best of VMworld Award’ in the Disruptive Technology category based on Intel Optane persistent memory. Intel has effectively redefined the relationship of storage and memory technologies so that our mutual customers can realize value from larger and more complex analytics workloads. We are proud to be partners with Intel in bringing this new technology to our joint VMware vSphere, VMware vSAN, and VMware Cloud Foundation customers.”
–Lee Caswell, vice president of Marketing for VMware Cloud Platform Business Unit

How It was Chosen: Judges did not accept nominations for the Disruptive Technology category. Instead, they chose to recognize two innovative products from other categories with the potential to either create a new market or disrupt an existing market with new technology. According to SearchServerVirtualization.com, the judges said Intel Optane persistent memory is “living up to the hype. Anything that requires a tremendous amount of data processing, Optane blows everything out of the water. It’s still a little young, but super interesting.”

“It is an honor to see Intel Optane persistent memory named as one of the Best of VMworld 2020 Award winners in the Disruptive Technology category because we, too, believe this technology will disrupt the market,” said Kristie Mann, Intel senior director of Optane Persistent Memory Products. “Intel Optane persistent memory can help businesses fuel innovation, crunch more data and speed decision-making, while lowering overall total cost of ownership.”

Why It Matters: Historically, memory and storage products have been limited by density, performance and cost, but Intel Optane persistent memory fills the gaps. By affordably expanding memory capacity and adding low-latency access to persistent data, Intel Optane persistent memory combines the best of memory and storage traits into one transformative product.

Receiving a Best of VMworld 2020 Award in the disruptive technology category further validates and underscores the potential and promise of Optane persistent memory. And, while the technology is still young, we are already beginning to see how disruptive it can be. Earlier this year, Intel Optane persistent memory open-source distributed asynchronous object storage (DAOS)solution set a new world record and now ranks number one for file system performance worldwide.

The Details: The Best of VMworld 2020 Awards recognize the most innovative new products in the server virtualization, cloud and end-user computing markets. TechTarget conducted this year’s deliberations virtually, and a panel of judges evaluated nominated products on multiple criteria, including innovation, value, performance, reliability and ease of use. The independent team of judges consisted of experts and editors from SearchServerVirtualization.com.

How Customers Use Optane Persistent Memory: Today, more than 200 of the Fortune 500 companies are in proof of concept (POC) or deployment, and over 85% of all POCs have moved to sale.

Intel at VMworld: Intel is a Diamond sponsor of VMworld 2020 and partners with VMware to optimize VMware products on Intel® data-centric technologies, such as Intel Optane persistent memory. We also work together to co-engineer building blocks, reference designs and tools to enable digital transformation.
